Chihuahuan Desert Nature Center

In early March 2025, we paid a visit to the Chihuahuan Desert Research Institute just outside of Fort Davis, Texas. While the surrounding desert offers sweeping, rugged vistas that stretch on for miles, it was the world-class cactus garden inside their greenhouse that completely stole my focus.

I decided to trade the wide landscape views for a much closer look, diving into the world of macro photography.

When you get that close to these desert survivors, the outside world drops away. Through the macro lens, a cactus isn't just a prickly plant; it's a masterclass in geometry, texture, and resilience. I spent hours capturing the intricate, spiraling patterns of the spines, the delicate translucent glow of early spring blooms, and the complex symmetry that keeps these plants alive in a harsh environment.

This gallery is an invitation to slow down and look a little closer at the incredible design hidden within the details of the desert.
