Earthships
Over the last twenty-five years, I’ve found myself drawn back to the high desert of Taos, New Mexico, visiting the Earthship Biotecture community three or four different times. Long before sustainability became a mainstream buzzword, these radical, off-grid structures were pushing the boundaries of what a home could be.
As a home builder myself, each visit was a masterclass in alternative construction. I watched how they harnessed thermal mass, integrated recycled materials like tires and bottles, and caught their own water and power. The knowledge and inspiration I gathered there heavily influenced my own approach to sustainable home building throughout my career.
Now that I’m retired from the building business, returning to the Earthships with a camera in hand feels a bit like coming full circle.
Walking through the community today, it’s incredibly rewarding to see that the experiment didn't just survive—it thrived. The community is actively growing, evolving its designs, and adapting to meet the climate and housing challenges of the future. This photo gallery captures the unique, sculptural beauty of these living buildings, the ingenious details embedded in their walls, and the enduring spirit of a community that dared to build differently.
