Grand Canyon National Park
There is a distinct advantage to staying right on the rim. In mid-May 2025, we set up camp for two nights at the Kachina Lodge, meaning the immense depths of the Grand Canyon were quite literally just steps from our door. This prime location allowed us to maximize every ounce of the morning and evening golden hours, catching the light when the canyon is at its most dramatic.
To cover as much ground as possible, we combined a bit of trail hiking with the park’s excellent shuttle tram system, hopping on and off to reach the best vantage points along the rim.
When it came to photography, I wasn't looking for standard, postcard-perfect blue skies. I wanted a mood that matched the geography. I was chasing angry clouds to pair with the angry rocks, the jagged canyon walls, the deep divides, and the pure, massive scale of the landscape. For three straight days, the weather gods delivered.
The result is a capture of the raw, powerful, and turbulent side of the canyon—where the sky and the stone seem to challenge one another.
